Heritage Days
History
This annual citywide celebration began in 1981 as a two-day event. Activities in Island Park included horseshoe pitching, canoe races, and a flea market.
Today, the event begins on Thursday with downtown street sales, a pet parade and a queen contest. Events wrap up on Sunday with a community church service and a sand volleyball tournament. Various events throughout the weekend include a kick-off breakfast, parade, road race, street dance, all-school reunion, 3-on-3 basketball tournament, kids games, train rides, etc.
Other events put on by the community include the Lyon county Reporter Bike and Car Show, United Methodist church Salad Luncheon, Premier Bank Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament, Kiwanis Fly-in Feed, Figure 8 Races at Rapid Speedway, River Valley Players Musical Revue etc.
Heritage Days Fund-raisers held throughout the year include a dodge ball tournament, a gold tournament, a taco supper and a 25-mile bike ride. Heritage Days is always the third full weekend in June.
